Iron Absorption

Some patients with Lyme disease report anemia with low total body iron status. The following substances can affect iron absorption:

Decrease Iron Absorption:

  • medications that impair absorption
  • avoiding vitamin C foods two hours before or after meat or seafood ingestion
  • calcium
  • eggs
  • oxalates
  • polyphenols
  • phytates
  • lactoferrin

Increase Iron Excretion

  • IP-6

Increase Iron Absorption

  • Vitamin C/ascorbic acid
  • alcohol
  • beta-carotene
  • Additive iron products
  • hydrochloric acid
  • meat
  • sugar
  • nicotine products
